{"id":2573,"date":"2014-10-10T15:13:01","date_gmt":"2014-10-10T14:13:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.zoomjapan.info\/?p=2573"},"modified":"2016-02-23T17:49:21","modified_gmt":"2016-02-23T17:49:21","slug":"no25-language-omoshiroi-yo-nihongo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zoomjapan.info\/wp\/2014\/10\/10\/no25-language-omoshiroi-yo-nihongo\/","title":{"rendered":"No25 [Language] Omoshiroi yo NIHONGO!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-bootstrap-area\"><p>Welcome once again, to the fascinating world of the Japanese language.<br \/>\nJapanese like to shorten words and sentences so much that in many cases all that is left at the end are a few letters.<\/p>\n<p><em>Japanese word \/ phrase of the month<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>KY (\u30b1\u30fc\u30ef\u30a4)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>KY is the shortened version of the phrase &#8220;kuuki yomenai&#8221; (\u7a7a\u6c17\u8aad\u3081\u306a\u3044) and is used to describe those types of people who remain blissfully oblivious of the social situations around them. If you do a direct translation, It literally means &#8220;cannot read the air&#8221;. A KY is the type of person who is clueless about the situation they find themselves in, doesn&#8217;t know what&#8217;s going on or cannot take the hints given by others, so they don\u2019t behave as they would be expected to. There are many things that are only considered appropriate to say or do only at certain times or in certain situations, and a KY person can be very awkward by not &#8220;reading the atmosphere&#8221; and doing something completely inappropriate instead. The Japanese rarely say &#8220;no&#8221; directly, so you often have to be able to read body language and other cues very well to avoid a misunderstanding and wind up being called a KY. Sometimes the sentence \u201cKuuki yome!\u201d (literally \u201cRead the air!\u201d) is heard in conversations, mostly between friends, to really drive home the point that someone should pay more attention to the situation. There are several variations on KY as well, including the even more extreme one below.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SKY \u201cSuper kuuki yomenai\u201d \uff08\u30b9\u30fc\u30d1\u30fc\u7a7a\u6c17\u8aad\u3081\u306a\u3044\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely cannot read the air\u201d Let&#8217;s take a look at when this could be used.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At a wedding party&#8230;<br \/>\nA: \u7d50\u5a5a\u5f0f\u306e\u30d1\u30fc\u30c6\u30a3\u30fc\u306a\u306e\u306b\u3042\u306e\u4eba\u306f\u5225\u308c\u306e\u6b4c\u3092\u6b4c\u3046\u306a\u3093\u3066&#8230;<br \/>\n(Kekkonshiki no pa-ti- nanoni ano hito wa wakare no uta wo utaunante&#8230;)<br \/>\nIt is a wedding party and that person is singing \u00a0songs about break ups.<br \/>\nB: \u3042\u306e\u4ebaSKY\u3060\u3088\u306d\u3002<br \/>\n(Ano hito su-pa-ky dayo ne.)<br \/>\nHe is Super KY (He really has no idea what he&#8217;s doing does he?!).<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Welcome once again, to the fascinating world of the Japanese language.
